Classy Kid

How awesome are these “Keep Me Coloring” Placemats from Classy Kid? These cool placemats wrap around the table, and adhere to it, creating a waterproof eating surface that germs can’t break through. Not only that, but it gives your kiddos something to do while you wait for the food (besides scream about how hungry they are). Even the crayons are neato — they are triangular shaped so that they won’t roll off the table. Even cooler — they are what Classy Kid calls a “Clean and Green” product — meaning they are completely biodegradable (made of 80% calcium) and will break down in a matter of months, not decades, while sitting in a landfill.
Another one of the “Clean and Green” products that I’m a fan of are the “Potty Protectors“. They not only cover the top of the toilet seat but wrap around the sides (because honestly, the sides of the toilet gross me out more than the seat sometimes — think about how rarely it is cleaned…) where kids hold on to the seat! They also have little grip strips to hold the protector in place.
Then today, when I was shopping in Target (I really like it there, I know, I know) I noticed
this “Boo-Boo Rescue” First Aid Kit! It is packed with everything you need to handle all of those little boo boos that can happen around the house. It comes with a Bump Reliever Cold Pack , no-sting antiseptic wipes, antibiotic cream, a “magic” splinter remover, animal-shaped bandages, a gauze roll, wound cleaner, and even a toy Stethoscope so that your little one can “help” with the diagnosis.
You can buy all of these products by Classy Kid on Amazon.com.
Dress pretty

I’m in the process of preparing for our trip to Europe, where the three cities we will be in (London, Paris, Nice) range in temperatures from 65 degrees to 95 degrees. I decided the best way to go as far as packing would be to purchase a bunch of summer dresses, so I’ve been gathering them up for a while as I found ones that I like. Today I found two new ones that I really like at Target! I’m a firm believer that being Chic doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
I got this dress, in Sea Green, about which hubby said “That’s a pretty color” (I almost fell over that he noticed)! I really like it, it is so feminine and TALK ABOUT COMFORTABLE! Being chic and comfy at the same time makes me a happy gal!

And I also got this Cap-Sleeve Print Dress in a Dot Print. Hubby made up for his thoughtful “pretty color” comment by saying that I looked like I had a bunch of “amoebas” all over me. Whatever, I really like it and it’s cute on, plus it is also really comfy — which is important when I’m walking a million miles per day like I know I will be.

The Sea Green Dress retails for $22.99, while the Dot-Print Dress retails for $24.99. I found them both in the store, but you can also find them on www.target.com.
Flying the safer skies!

Last week, Little AG and I were lucky enough to travel with hubby to Washington DC on business. Hubby and I were frequent travelers before Little AG was born, and once she came along she was quickly introduced to the world of traveling with us. The first time she flew was when she was barely 3 months old, and since then she has been on over 15 flights — with no sign of slowing down (hubby and I are both aspiring pilots and we hope to be flying the friendly skies ourselves soon).
When Little AG was an infant, it was easy to bring her infant car seat on the plane with me and install it in a seat for her. When she graduated to her bigger car seat, a Britax Boulevard, we discovered after a one day trip down to Miami that itwasnotthatsimple. While we are happy with our choice of car seat for her, and our Britax is approved for air travel when installed correctly, IT IS HUGE. Even with two of us carrying all of the “stuff” that goes along with a baby, the car seat got to be a little much, and hubby all but broke his arms carrying it all through the (seemingly endless) trek through the terminal in Miami. We ended up carrying Little AG through the airport and letting the Britax ride in her stroller. It was the only sane option.
Louise Stoll, a grandmother of nine, watched a similar situation to the one that I described above happen with her pregnant daughter who was struggling to carry a toddler, diaper bag, and car seat off of a plane. She felt that there had to be a safe way for children to fly without lugging that ridiculously heavy car seat around the airport. With the help of her family and friends, she invented CARES — a FAA approved harness designed specifically for aviation use for children ages 1-4 (who meet the weight and height requirements). It is made for children who are old enough to be in their own seat, but are too small to rely on the seat belt alone to protect them. CARES is a harness that works in conjunction with the airplane seat belt and provides children the same level of safety as a car seat.
So, now that you know a little about what CARES is, let me tell you about our experience using it. First of all, the CARES harness came with a DVD that explained more about how it works and shows parents how to correctly install the
harness on the plane. I watched the DVD twice the night before we left to make sure that I would be able to install CARES quickly but efficiently once on the plane. The next day, we boarded our plane to Baltimore on Continental Airlines (more on our not very kid friendly experience with this airline later — suffice it to say that I will avoid flying them again at most any cost) and I installed CARES in the middle seat between hubby and myself for Little AG. She was sitting there, tucked in with her Tigger (so cute!) rather proud of herself that she was sitting in a big girl seat. I was happy too — because CARES was easy to install and I was still marveling at how it took up minimal room in my bag and saved us from lugging that car seat on the plane. (I should add that Little AG is 16 months old but weighs 25 lbs, so she is within the correct weight range)
Right before we took off, a flight attendant walked by, doing seatbelt checks, observed Little AG in her harness and said to my husband, “Just to let you know, it’s safer for you to hold her in your lap during take-off and landing then to have her sit there.” To this statement, I reply that the harness is FAA approved and that she meets the weight requirements to be in her own seat with this harness. She just said “Oh it is? Ok.” and walked to the front of the plane. A minute later she’s back, and she’s brought company — apparently she “told on us” to the senior flight attendant. The second flight attendant tells us (in no uncertain terms) that Little AG MAY NOT sit in that seat, with that harness, and that they do not allow harnesses to be used whatsoever on their airline. Since she was under 2 years old, we had to hold her, they said. I again told her that it was FAA approved that that we were allowed to use it, with her telling me that there was no such thing as an FAA approved harness (WRONG!) and that we were not allowed to use it. She wouldn’t give me the chance to show her the documentation or take it any further, so it finally ended like this — we were told that since we hadn’t purchased a seat for her we had to hold her during takeoff and landing, even thought the plane was empty. (“She’s a lap child since you don’t have a seat for her, so she needs to be on your lap.”) Honestly, it was a very dumb excuse, and we all knew it, but we weren’t going to create a scene and continue to argue. Our words fell on deaf ears.
Towards the end of the flight, two flight attendants (the first flight attendant that we met and now a new girl) come bursting down the aisle together, excitedly asking if this was the CARES harness. I showed them the packaging (as well as the card that came with it, declaring that I have the right to carry it on and use this harness according to the FAA) feeling a mix of irritation and satisfaction all at the same time. They had gone and looked it up in their manual, and it said that the CARES harness is the only one approved by the FAA, therefore the only one that can be used. However, neither of these girls had ever seen one, so they didn’t know any better. I honestly don’t feel that being uneducated is an excuse for not allowing us to use it, but I did appreciate the fact that they admitted it. I was happy to be allowed to use it for Little AG for the rest of the flight and for landing.
We were advised later to let our flight attendants know ahead of time that we would be using the CARES harness and that it is the only one approved for aviation, and that would make life easier for all involved. (I can’t resist adding that I feel like we tried to do that, but maybe we just weren’t clear enough.) I highly recommend purchasing a CARES harness for your child, but you should be prepared to show documentation that it is FAA approved and fight for your right to use it should it be necessary. Your child is safer in a proper seat belt restraint than in your lap, and it is obvious that some airlines are not providing their flight attendants with the proper education to know that.
Overall, our experience using CARES was great. I felt safer having it for her, and we are planning on using it for our trip to Europe in a week
– it will be a lifesaver for the 9 hour flight. I encourage you to spread the word to all of your flying friends with young tots — this is a really awesome product that provides great peace of mind and a lot more ease than using a car seat. You can purchase it directly from the CARES website for $74.95.
PS — It is also approved for use in private aircraft!
The perfect vase

Back in May, I was delighted to learn that I had won one of these way cool vases from Jillable in a contest on My Mom Shops (and I’m sooo not lucky people, I never win things). They are made from a durable plastic and come in all sorts of cool patterns and colors. They take up very small amounts of room because they fold completely flat when they don’t have water in them. A pretty cool concept, in my opinion.
When I got it my vase in the mail, I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical. It has been sitting under my counter next to all of my other vases for about a month. On Sunday night we attended a wedding for my cousin, and there were all of these white roses everywhere. At the end of the reception, we were leaving, and the brides mom (my aunt) handed me a HUGE handful of these gorgeous white roses, and I certainly wasn’t going to say no — they would have ended up in the trash. So, when we got home I pulled out the Jillable vase, and, still a bit skeptical I cut the bottoms off of the roses under the water and then proceeded to place them in the vase. As I filled the vase with water it expanded, to create a stable base so that it would stand up straight. I placed the roses in it, and thanks to the narrow top on the vase, it created this gorgeous bouquet of roses that I can never seem to accomplish in the vases with wider necks. Best of all, it actually stood up on it’s own and looks ADORABLE.
So now I’m in love. This is the perfect vase — it doesn’t take up too much room, folds flat when not in use, but is fully functional and trendy when you need it. This morning my friend T walked into my house, and, pointing at it said “Is that a vase?!” I nodded, proud of my little Jillable vase. It’s way cool.
Oh, and it’s affordable too — at only $8 per vase, and you can choose your pattern. I have the “Flower Power” but I had a hard time choosing — they are all really pretty. Check them out at www.jillable.com.
Stewart+Brown: Organic Pioneers

If I were to write a description of myself, fashionista would be a word that would slip in. I do enjoy fashion, though I find myself more on the Charolotte end of the spectrum, rather than the Carrie end, if you catch my drift. My style is classy, classic, and comfortable, with a hint of trendy.

That being said, I was quite enamored when I came across the Stewart+Brown website. The first thing that caught my eye were the amazing clothes! All of these beautiful pieces, so many, in fact, that I had a hard time choosing favorites. I clicked on over to the organic cotton clothing, and I eventually settled on this beautiful jersey dress in “pomegranate” (I love that they didn’t call it “red”, don’t you?). It is fitted at the top, seamed into pleats that unfold as they go down, creating a soft, girly look and a dress with lots of movement (I’ll admit it, I twirled in it. C’mon, don’t act like you haven’t done it.) I was a little nervous, just ordering by the size chart online, but when I received it, it fit perfectly. Not to mention that it was the most comfortable thing I’ve ever worn. Seriously, I didn’t want to take it off. The organic cotton is so soft that I insisted that hubby “feel” the dress. Even he was impressed, and that is hard to do.

I also chose this beautiful collar scoop shell top. It is made from 100% organic cotton, and has the most intricate embroidery detail and also has a silk screen detail on the mock sleeves that I love. It has a great fit, and is long enough for me — which is a rarity on my 5’8″ frame — it seems like every top I that like is too short.

Lastly, I was fortunate enough to try out two of their fabulous totes. The Clover Purse tote in Pomegranate (when I unwrapped it I promptly dumped my stuff out of my other bag and placed it all in this one — it’s gorgeous) has beautiful detailing on the outside inspired by iron work that one of the owners/founders of Stewart Brown saw on a trip to Portugal. It is made from a surplus hemp blend and lined with organic cotton.
The other bag that I’m currently lovin’ on is this Green Heart Tote that I fully intend to use to tote my groceries in. It is made from 100% organic surplus cotton, so you can go green by using your tote and know that even your tote bag is helping!
Head on over to Stewart+Brown and check out all of their great products — you can shop til you drop and help the earth at the same time!
Wee Go are still a Go!

I don’t know if you remember but I talked about these fabulous bottles from Baby Life, called the Wee Go baby bottles back in April (you can see that post here). Well, apparently I wasn’t the only one in the world who thought that these were fabulous bottles! They have been sold out for well over a month and Baby Life couldn’t speed production along fast enough to keep up
with the supply in demand!
Last week I received one of these awesome (and I do mean awesome) bottles in the mail and I’ve gotta tell ya, I’m just as impressed, if not more, as I was when I first heard about them. The bottles are glass, but they are covered with a non-toxic silicone sleeve that is just as stylish as it is functional. There are 6 different colored sleeves to choose from, but I love the entire rainbow of colors! The best part about these bottles is that they are BPA free so you don’t have to worry about what your baby is really drinking in along with that milk! (Not familiar with BPA? You should be. Read the Wikipedia article on it here to catch yourself up!)
The nipple of the bottle is made of the highest-grade silicone, is crafted in France and meets the most stringent EU guidelines for baby products (which tend to be more strict than US guidelines). Of course, all of the products used in production are completely safe and non-toxic.
The Wee Go Baby Life Bottles are pricey at $18 each, but will hold up over time and will be a good return on your investment. I know that each of our old Avent bottles cost us around $9 each and weren’t nearly as good of quality as these are. You can purchase these awesome bottles directly from the Baby Life website.
Chic Shopper Chick Giveaway — Growth Sprouts Tees
Back in April I wrote a post about how much I loved these snap tees for each month in baby’s first year of life. I certainly wish that I had found them before Little AG passed the one year mark, because they are SOOO smart! Every month, when she hit the mark of being another month older, we would put her in a little outfit and take pictures of her so that we could remember what she looked like at one month, two months, three months, etc. If I would have had a set of these snap tees from Growth Sprouts/Culpeper General, I wouldn’t have had to set the date on my camera — I would have known how old she was just by looking at the pictures!
They offer several different patterns to choose from, so you can pick what suits you and your baby the most. They are all so adorable that I am having trouble choosing a favorite! Each tee is handmade on 100% cotton Gerber onesies by heat transfer. And, being the gift snob that I am, can I just mention that I think that this would be the most AMAZING shower gift??? Can you imagine the oohs and aaahs that this sweet gift will elicit when the parents-to-be unwrap it at the shower? A set of 6 tees sells for $40 and a set of 12 sells for $75. Check out their Etsy storefront of Culpeper General for more information!

To top it all off — this is a small, family owned business — they sell most of their products on Etsy — and you know how I love to support both family businesses and Etsy stores!
Want it? Culpeper General is offering one lucky Chic Shopper Chick reader the chance to win a set of 6 growth tees in their choice of pattern! Winner will be able to choose from either a 1-6 months set of tees or a 7-12 months set of tees! To enter, just follow the easy-peasy rules below!

Good luck! This contest will end on June 30th, 2008 at 11:59 pm CST. The winner will be chosen via www.random.org and announced on here and on PRIZEY Fetch.
A small change at CSC, and you can help!
I have now officially been posting on Chic Shopper Chick regularly since April, and I am constantly amazed at how much it has grown. I am thrilled, and I truly appreciate each of you who clicks through the website on a regular basis. I’ve discovered that this website works in a constant circle…the more that you participate and visit my blog, the more things are marketed to me, hence the more things I have to giveaway to you! That is the reason I offer extra entries into contests for those of you who are subscribers — you keep this website on it’s feet!
I have recently come to a point where I am spending 20-30 hours a week working on this website — through posting, writing emails, returning emails, scheduling giveaways, mailing off products to winners, and scouring the web for the latest and greatest things to talk about here with you. While I love doing it, it does get to the point sometimes where I am making a choice between this site and other things that I need to be doing. In order to justify spending the time on this site that I do, I have made the decision to allow advertisers to market their products on this site. It will be a minor change, but it will help me to pay the bills and, like I said, justify the time I am spending on this site.
With that in mind, I am asking you, my readers and friends, to help me out! Advertisers stay happy when they see that my readers click through to their websites and spend a few minutes browsing around. So, with that, I ask that when you see my “sponsors” in the sidebar, that you click through from my site and look around to see what they have to offer. I will never allow advertising here that I don’t feel like is pertinent to you so you will never have to worry about being taken to a site that I wouldn’t normally recommend anyway. It is a small thing that you can do to help support this site, and it only takes a few minutes of your time when you visit CSC.
Thanks so much for reading CSC. I read each and every one of your comments and truly appreciate you visiting each day. Please keep coming back and keep on clicking!
For your benefit…
We are finally home from DC. It was a blast but so tiring at the same time (so much shopping, so little time) mainly because Little AG and I had a lot of downtime while hubby was in meetings and it was just the two of us, sans car or other form of transportation. As far as the sporadic posting, — lets suffice it to say that our nights were exceedingly late, and as lovely as the Holiday Inn Georgetown was, they only had WIRED high-speed internet, which hubby and I had to fight over share.
Anyway, I managed to make it to my favorite store ever, Sephora, while I was schlepping Little AG around M Street, looking to spend the giftcard that I won in a
contest on Chic Critique. Of course, Sephora can be overwhelming — there is such a fine line between products that I could use every day and products that would just be “fun” to have but aren’t a necessity (like that leg bronzing stick….). While I was in there, I was approached by a Will Farrell look alike who offered to apply some makeup on me (a long night coupled with an early morning with a toddler who wasn’t sleeping in her own bed had allowed me to feel justified in taking to the streets with a clean and moisturized yet cosmetic-free face) because I think I broke some sort of unspoken rule of entering Sephora fresh-faced and frighteningly makeup free. When he was finished I wandered over to the Benefit display section and noticed this new cheek and lip stain called Posietint — a pink version of the already-popular yet way-too-red-for-me Benetint.
I was able to try the Posietint on over my freshly applied foundation (thanks Will!) and I fell in love with it. It is a perfect, easily blended and natural solution that gives cheeks that slightly flushed look. It’s better for those of us with fairer skin since when I wear the reddish Benetint it looks like I’m trying out for a spot at the Moulin Rouge… It is also just as effective on your lips, and, as it is a stain, it will also make a great lipstick base and will make for a long wearing effect under your lipstick. You can buy Posietint on the Benefit Cosmetics website for $28.
Chic Shopper Chick Giveaway — Warm Biscuit Bedding Company Giftcard
THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.
I have been LOVING the weather here in DC. Back home in Louisiana, we have had the air conditioner running and the baby pool out and filled since late March (when it hit 85), and we haven’t looked back yet. However, I realize for those of you who live in parts of the country or world where summer doesn’t exist year round, summer is officially upon you too.
Warm Biscuit Bedding Company has lots of fun things to keep kids busy over the summer. One of my favorites is this ladybug tree swing that sells for $29. Matter of fact, I love it so much I sort of wish they made a big-girl version of it too! What can I say, I’m a kid at heart!

I also love this complete kit of Camp Gear — it comes with a polyurethane rain cape in a neoprene bag, a synthetic alarm whistle in case of trouble, and a screw-top box for items found on the way. How much fun would this be for overnight camping trips in the backyard? It retails for $35.
It rains here at 2 pm almost every day during the summer — sometimes it is a brief shower and sometimes it lasts into the night, but during a Louisiana summer you can bet on rain almost every day. So what to do with the kids once the rain comes? You can try out this “Look and Cook Cookbook“, with 50 simple kid-tested recipes to occupy the youngest chefs in the making. It retails for $20.
Want it? Warm Biscuit Bedding Company is graciously offering one Chic Shopper Chick reader a $50 gift card to be used towards the item or items of their choice. To enter, follow the rules below.
- Go to www.warmbiscuit.com and look around. Then come back here and leave a comment on this post telling me what you would use the $50 gift card to purchase.
- Please leave a valid email address if you would like to be contacted if you win. Otherwise, winners are posted here and on Prizey Fetch.
- If the winner does not respond within 72 hours I will choose a different winner.
- US and Canadian entries!!!
- Earn extra credit! Choose one of the following for ONE extra credit entry. Any further attempts to woo me will be disqualified!
- Write about this giveaway and send me the link in a separate post.
- Subscribe to my feed and let me know about it in a separate post.
