Lands End – Home of the Perfect Swimsuit {Giveaway CLOSED}

May 23, 2009 by
Filed under Giveaways

Land's End SwimsuitIf you are like me, and practically most other women out there, the summer heat means sundresses, sandals, and suntans, but it also means those other dreaded “s” words — “swimsuit shopping”.  I’ve written about the quest for the perfect swimsuit many times on my site because each year, while I love the idea of finding that perfect swimsuit, I always seem to fall short.  Land’s End approached me this year with the offer to try out one of their new swimsuits and the offer to giveaway a gift card to one of my readers.  I was excited because I still hadn’t found my suit for this summer, and if you’ve read some of my previous posts, you know I’ve recently lost a good bit of weight, so I was really excited to ditch last summer’s tankini and slip into a bikini.

Now, let me explain my issue with bikinis.  It’s not my tummy.  I actually feel that a one-piece accentuates my little pooch more than a bikini does.  However, I’m still curvy.  So um, that said, I need something that a lot of bikinis don’t offer — coverage and support.  Yes people, I need a little more material in places where others might not.  Not because I’m trying to hide anything, but I am just not the itsy bitsy bikini type.  When Land’s End offered me the chance to try out one of their suits, I noticed that most of their suits offer fuller coverage, especially on the backside.  If I’m being honest, my initial thought was “uh-oh, I’m going to look like I’m wearing a mommy bathing suit.”  You know the ones I’m talking about, right?  The GIANT swimsuits that may as well be a one piece because of all of the coverage?  To me it’s a fate worse than mom jeans.  If I’m really being honest?  I’ve never ordered a swimsuit online, and I NEVER like the picture-101first swimsuit I try on. I have to go through at least 20 before I even find one I “kinda” like.

I put my skepticism aside and asked for this two-piece Capri swimsuit in white.  Lucky for me they were out of the white in my size, because they sent me the Island Leaf print instead.  I say lucky because it turns out that it looked even better than I think the white would have looked, and I loved it.  Ok, so when I put it on I was literally floored.  I never like the first swimsuit I put on.  Heck, I don’t even usually like the ones I like, if that makes sense.  I pulled this swimsuit on an turned to look in the mirror and, well, to be honest…?  I did a little dance.  I love it.  I love it so much, that I actually went ahead and ordered the same swimsuit in white, so I’ll have two cut like this.  I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of the swimsuit as well, not sure how to fully describe it, but it’s very well made, the material and hardware are clearly higher-end in my opinion, and it’s fully lined as well.  Like I said, I am very impressed with the excellent fit and cut of the suit, and just frankly that a bathing suit ordered from a catalog can be such a great and flattering fit right out of the bag.  I was so impressed that I contemplated taking a picture of myself or doing a video with me in the bathing suit, but then I suddenly regained my sanity and decided against it.  :)

Old Navy Celebrates Summer With $1 Flip Flops!

May 21, 2009 by
Filed under Shoes

You read that right, flip and flop your way into summer with $1 flip flops on Saturday, May 23rd ONLY at Old Navy.  If you read my site often, you already know I love Old Navy, and I love shoes, so this is even better.  Heck, at 50 cents a shoe I can afford to buy them in every color (but it seems you’re limited to 5 pairs)!  Plus, I have this theory that flip flops shouldn’t count as “actual” pairs of shoes.  Like, when someone looks in your closet and goes “whoa, thats a lot of shoes!” – flip flops shouldn’t count towards that tally.  Ok, maybe 3 pairs of flip flops equal one pair of regular shoes.  But, I digress.

Living in Louisiana I pretty much have the seasonal weather to wear flip flops unless it’s snowing – and that only happens once every 5 years or so (snow, that is) so I know exactly where I’ll be on Saturday to stock up on Flip Flops.  Check it out at Old Navy!

Wiggle It, Just a Little Bit! {Giveaway CLOSED}

May 20, 2009 by
Filed under Beauty, Giveaways

If you’re a loyal reader (thank you!) then you know I am obsessed in love with almost any and all beauty products.  I’ve mentioned it on Feel Good Fashion and here on Chic Shopper Chick several times, but my one true obsession love is mascara.  I currently have 3 different tubes of it in my makeup bag, and I’m not a bit too happy since I came down with pink eye on Monday and now need to throw them ALL out.  If you’re a beauty fanatic like I am, you are probably aware of the high-end mascaras that have come out with vibrating varities in the past year or so.  However, to date, there has been no “drugstore” version available.

maybelline_banner

My favorite mascara EVER was actually Maybelline’s Illegal Lengths mascara with a curved brush, but for some (*gasp*) unknown reason to me, Maybelline discontinued it. To make it up to me Thanks to my role as one of Walmart’s ElevenMoms, I was able to try out Maybelline Pulse Perfection (their new vibrating mascara) before it ever even hit shelves (can you tell I felt kinda cool?)   According to Maybelline, Pulse Perfection delivers 7,000 vibrations per minute in 7 synchronized actions so lashes are transformed to perfection.  Ok, so I know what you’re thinking “… hmm … why do I need vibrating mascara?”.  My friend, you have come to the right place, because I have my own personal opinion on the matter!  You see, I was taught to apply mascara starting at the base of my lashes, wiggling the brush back and forth until I reach the tips of my lashes.  This helps distribute the product at the base (which gives your eyes a much more defined look) and just gives you better distribution of the mascara all around.  Pulse Perfection takes the wiggling work out of your mascara routine for you!

Ok, so for the big question…does it work?  My answer is YES!  I plan to make you a video to show you how much I actually really like it, but alas, I have pink eye, and that video?  Well, it would be not-so-hot.  So, when I’m looking a little less…erm…pink around the eyes…I’ll make a video to show you why I like this product.  However, in the meantime, here is my take on it!  The vibrating takes a little getting used to for first time users (or the klutzy variety, as in my case) but it allows the mascara to go on quickly and nice and thick.  Quick is definitely a plus for those 5 minute beauty routines!  It elongates and thickens my lashes without a doubt, and I really like the way it looks.  My only caveat:  apply your second coat of this mascara before the first one is completely dry.  I waited for them to dry the first time around and ended up with spider lashes.  And as my friend Jillian would say, “nobody likes spider lashes!”.  However, when you apply both coats after the other, the result is among the best I’ve gotten from any mascara on the market.

maybelline-pulse-perfection

This product is not out in stores yet (this is, again, where I feel really cool for getting a sneak preview), but you can find it nationwide starting on May 28th for $14.95. Until then, you can purchase it exclusively from Walmart.com for $12.95.  Honestly, I know that $15 for Maybelline mascara seems like a lot, but when you consider that other brands cost up to 3 times as much, plus you can grab it for $13 online?  Well, I think it’s really a heck of a deal.

Would you like a chance to try out Maybelline Pulse Perfection Mascara before the masses as well?  Thanks to Maybelline I have two tubes of it to giveaway to two very lucky Chic Shopper Chick readers!  To enter to win, leave a comment here telling me what beauty product you just cannot live without!  After your initial comment, every other (pertinent) comment left on this site on other posts from now through May 28th will count as an extra entry each.  You don’t need to come back to this post and tell me you commented on another post, I can stalk track you via your email/IP address.   As usual, the following extra entries are also available:   blog this contest with a link back to this contest, stumbling Chic Shopper Chick (leave your stumble name), subscribing to my site, tweeting about this contest, following me on Twitter.  That’s a ton of ways to win, so good luck! http://bit.ly/12IiYz

My dear friend Sarah from Bio Girl and her husband Nick have finally welcomed their sweet little bundle of joy.  Sarah is a contributor here at Chic Shopper Chick, as well as a dear friend of mine.  Sarah and Nick elected to wait until the baby was born to learn if it was a boy or a girl, and a week ago Sarah delivered a gorgeous, healthy baby boy named Henry.

HenryPlease go over and tell Sarah and Nick congratulations, and welcome sweet baby Henry to the world.  You can see the video of when Nick told their family that it’s a boy (sooo cute) and also check out Henry’s official birth announcement.  So g’won then – head over and leave them some comment love!  Congratulations again Sarah and Nick – I wish you all the happiness in the world as your family grows!

If in the past I’ve failed to mention it, it’s time I spilled the beans.  I’m obsessed.  Yes, I have a very, very, very unhealthy obsession.  Be it night or day, I dream constanly about the day that I can wrap my hands around my very own Chanel bag.  It’s my own personal obsession, my own personal goal.  To save up enough money to one day buy my sweet, sweet Chanel bag…wow.  My friend and fellow fashionista Audrey and I were discussing how she fulfilled her designer dreams on her 30th birthday with her very own Louis Vuitton bag.  I’m 26 now — I’m thinking maybe, just maybe, I can put some money aside starting now and make that my goal as well.  Rain Couture

Of course, I’d go to great lengths to protect that bag.  You don’t invest that kind of money in something and not treat it well!  So what about rainy days?  I live in Louisiana and in the summer it rains here, quite literally, almost every day.  It was then that I stumbled upon Rain Couture and it was the “ah ha!” moment I had been waiting for.  Now you no longer have to choose between your designer bag and your expensive blowout when you find yourself stuck in a sudden summer sprinkle! These awesome bags come in two sizes, and even allow you to stay fashionable while protecting your fashion investment.  It seems they are very popular — when I clicked the link to buy at the online store, it said they are completely sold out due to high demand – even with a fairly high price tag!  So what do you think?  Would you use a bag from Rain Couture?  Let me know in the comments – I’m curious to hear your thoughts!

One of my favorite stores to shop at is Forever 21 (or XXI) because of their uber-reasonable prices and cute, trendy clothing.  In all honesty, I have to be very careful with the way I take care of my clothing from this store, and I have brought home items on more than one occasion that had a hole in them or that didn’t last – so we’re not talking the highest-end clothing here.  However, for a fashionista on a budget, like me, it’s a great place to shop, because when my white cami bites the dust, I can easily afford to buy a new one at $2.50 a pop!  Anyway, I spent a good 2 hours in the store today, sifting through the racks as usual to find gold.  Yes, it’s a total treasure hunt, but worth it in the end.  Check out some my purchases!

Forever 21

A total Francophile and former French teacher, I couldn’t pass up this adorable but simple Paris tee.

Forever 21

I’m always on the lookout for new cocktail dresses or summer dresses, and when I put this Satin Swept Pleat dress on, well, I just couldn’t bear to pass it up.  It looked so sophisticated and dressy on, plus, at $19.50, it was a downright steal!  And yes, I bought it in pink.

Forever 21

I couldn’t resist grabbing one of these classic white button-up shirts with a skinny belt to cinch the waist.  A modern spin on a classic look, perfect to pair with my black skirt and heels for a meeting.

Forever 21

I also grabbed one of these gathered knit tunics – it will go great with a pair of jeans but I can also slip it on with a pair of dress pants for a meeting!

Mover Music For Your Body And Brain! {Giveaway CLOSED}

May 9, 2009 by
Filed under Giveaways

imagination-moversWe are a family of musicians.  Well, mostly.  My family is largely without the music gene, but we all do enjoy singing at the top of our lungs (and we don’t sound half bad, thankyouverymuch).  However, Little AG has a a mommy who sings, and a daddy who plays drums and bass, a Mimi who plays the piano, a Pops who plays bass, and an Aunt Wel who is such a talented singer that she moved to New York to share her talents with the world.  So when little AG was born, we hoped/figured she might have some tendancy towards music.  We haven’t doubted it since then — at just a few months old she would wave her hands around in time to music — and now at two, she sings along and mimics dance moves.  She naturally gravitates towards musical toys – music is a part of who she is.  When she was about 20 months old, we discovered the Imagination Movers on Playhouse Disney and Little AG was fascinated.  A group of 4 cool guys who solve problems together in their “Idea Warehouse” in order to help others.  Oh, and they sing awesome alternative rock songs for kids while they do it!

I first heard about the Imagination Movers many years before I had a child.  I sang in church with Smitty’s (one of the IMs) mom, so I got to hear all about their road to their success.  In our days owning a live sound production company, we even did sound for them once at a local event.  These guys even took the main stage at JazzFest 2 weeks ago — no small feat!  There is a local pride in New Orleans that you won’t find just anywhere, and I think my fellow NOLA peeps and I always feel a sense of pride and obligation to support our own.  The Imagination Movers are no exception!  We don’t watch them just because they are local though.  We are HUGE fans simply because, well, they’re GOOD. Seriously, most kiddo music makes me want to pull my hair out, but I actually ENJOY the music by the Imagination Movers.  I dance and sing along to all of the songs, though we have our favorites like “Clean My Room”, “Shakeable You”, and “Puppy Dog”.  And yes, I do know all of the words — heck, I even find myself singing harmony!

Their first Disney-released DVD “Imagination Movers – Warehouse Mouse Edition” hit stores on May 5th, and if you haven’t heard of these guys yet, you should definitely check them out!  They encourage creative problem-solving and have such a fun rock and roll sound.  You can check out clips from Bucket of Trouble and The Tooth Hurts!  From the press release:  “The quartet has won multiple national music awards and were named a Parenting Pick by Parenting Magazine. Most recently, the Movers and the TV series were honored with an award for Outstanding Kids Entertainment by the Common Sense Media Awards, which honors nationally recognized individuals and organization that have made a profound impact in the world of kids and family media. The Movers’ Walt Disney Records release, “Juice Box Heroes,” was selected by iTunes as a 2008 Top 10 pick in the children’s music genre.

Win It! I have a copy of “The Imagination Movers: Warehouse Mouse Edition” to give away to a lucky CSC reader!  As a bonus, 10 other readers will win autographed postcards from the Movers themselves!  To be entered to win one of these great prizes, leave a comment on this post.  After your initial comment, every other (pertinent) comment left on this site on other posts from now through May 18th will count as an extra entry each.  You don’t need to come back to this post and tell me you commented on another post, I can stalk track you via your email/IP address.   As usual, extra entries are also available for blogging this contest with a link back here, stumbling Chic Shopper Chick (leave your stumble name), subscribing to my site, or following me on Twitter.  That’s a ton of ways to win, so good luck!

My Top 5 Mother’s Day Picks

Every day is truly Mother’s Day right?  Each day I spend as a mommy is more rewarding than the last, and I’m sure that moms feel the same way across the board.  However, it seems there is this day coming up this weekend…something about Moms, a day, kids, and um…oh yeah!  PRESENTS!  Ha hah!  No matter what you think, presents are typically a part of a Mother’s Day Celebration.  Since I’m not hiding the fact that I kinda like presents, I give you my top 5 Mother’s Day Picks!

#5)  A LITTLE PAMPERING — I love to be pampered and I (clearly) have a penchant for beauty products.  If you want to give mom a little of the pampering treatment without sending her to an expensive salon or spa, try some of these at home options!  All of these can be purchased for a very reasonable price, and are sure to make mom swoon!  I love the Sephora Manicure Set, the Clairins Self-Tanning Kit, and the Tropical Jasmine Body product collection!

#4) ORGANIZATION — This January I got my very first momAgenda and I LOVE it.  I can’t even fully express the love that I feel for it, actually.  I was always one of those chicks who would buy day planners and organizers but they never quite seemed to “fit” me.  The momAgenda is perfect, and really fits my needs as a busy mom.  I truly use mine everyday, and it has seperate spaces to keep myself, my daughter, and the rest of my family organized.

#3) A DIGITAL SLR — I am a picture nut, freak, etc.  I took over 10,000 pictures in the first month of Little AG’s life alone.  I have had many point and shoots, and I am finally ready (desperate?) to upgrade to a digital SLR.  I asked around to some of my photography-saavy friends, and they recommended that I get the Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera ($415) or the Canon Digital Rebel Digital SLR Camera ($699.95) to start out with.  If you have a preference or have tried one of these, please let me know!

#2)  ALL THAT GLITTERS — Give mom a piece of jewelry, seriously, you know we like the stuff!  Generally, something that sparkles or is shiny will make us beam with happiness.  Ever thought about giving mom something in that “Little Blue Box“?

#1)  NINTENDO DS — I’m in love with this new Nintendo DS Lite Bundle, which was aptly released in Green for spring, just in time for Mother’s Day!  It comes with the most adorable carrying case and a copy of Personal Trainer: Cooking. And yes, I totally need a personal cooking coach.  Remember, I never claimed to be domestic.  The DS is great to slip in your purse and play if you’re sitting at a doctor’s office, standing in line at the store, etc. and would be a welcome distraction for any busy mom because it’s so easy just to spend a few minutes playing!  My #1 pick for a Mother’s Day Gift!
