A Two Suitcase Kinda Trip

23 Comments 12 October 2009

Don’t forget that you can win an iPod Shuffle for commenting on any posts during the month of October. See the bottom of this post for details!

I’m so excited because I’m heading to Blog World Expo in Las Vegas this week – which sort of brings me back full circle to the beginning of my blogging days. BWE was the first blogging conference I ever attended and is, to date, still my favorite of them all. I’m excited to be returning, and even more excited to be moderating a panel on the Ethics of Mommyblogging on Friday. If you’re going to be there, you should most certainly stop by, as I’m sure we’ll be discussing all sorts of hot-button issues (are you sick of hearing about the FTC guidelines yet?!).

Naturally, in order to do something like travel and attend a really cool conference, it is necessary for me to pack all of the vital items in my life into a little box to put under the plane. Don’t worry, I’m flying Southwest, so it will be well taken care of. The bigger issue is…UGH. I have a closet full of nothing to wear. And packing? Well, packing ranks up there with sticking toothpicks in my own eyeballs. Sorry to be so graphic, but it’s true.

I would totally pay someone to pack for me. Know anyone who would and could handle it? Make sure all of the outfits match? Make sure I don’t forget anything? Make sure it’s all washed and ironed, tucked away in neat little outfits as to avoid any confusion? Is there a service for that? There should be. I’ll be their first customer.

You should see my bed. It’s full of clothes, hangers, purses, etc. I’m considering sleeping on the floor tonight, instead actually in the bed itself. It would make things easier, don’t you think?

In the mood to giggle? Watch me huff about hating to pack in the video below and feel free to poke fun at me in the comments.

PS — Feel the urge to comment yet? How about some motivation? All comments left on my site for the month of October will be entered to win an iPod shuffle! To enter to win, just leave some sort of comment on any post from the month of October. You may enter as many times as there are posts, and get extra entries for tweeting. Comments that had a bit of thought put into them are greatly appreciated. Good luck, contest ends October 31st and 11:59 pm CST.

I love to travel, but hate to pack. I start by putting outfits together well in advance, hanging them in my closet together. A well thought out plan. I place the shoes under them,so I don’t forget the one’s that match. I put any footies/knee highs/socks, inside the shoes and sneakers. Then I get all my assories, and put them together in a jewelry wrap, and leave them out on my dresser, so I won’t forget them. I put the make-up in a bag also, to keep it all together, and just use it out of my bag, until I’m ready to leave. All undies and nighties, I put together in my draw, and try not to use them. That way no washing the night before. Doing this keeps me from stressing. I know just what is going into my suit case. I don’t have to freak out about forgetting anything. I even have small packs of kleenex and gum! Happy Traveling!!!!!!

Your too funny! Basically it’s easier if you use the same accessories for each day, especially if it’s only a few days.

Although I totally love your pink and purple flats you wore to Frito Lays and I need to know where you got them!

Oh and to the comment above, waiting 2 months to unpack.. really???? OK, that’s my neat freak self talking. I hate having anything laying around or messy. It all has a place in my home and if I’m not suing it, it goes back in “it’s place”.

Have been traveling for many years, and I also make a list. I always have a black skirt, pants, and shorts, depending on the weather, plus all other colors. I bring as many dressy blouses, and dressy T’s, as I can fit. T’s folded, blouses on top. Always Black and brown shoes a must. Then Bronze, silver or gold shoes. Sandals & flats, and sneakers, for the easier days. I put the shoes in the cases that the clothes will match. Lots of undies, and a few pair of socks, just in case there is cold weather. All shoes, are packed at the bottom of the suitcase, by the wheels, that stops the suitcase from falling over. All toiletries are put in big zip lock bags and placed between all the clothes, in different spots, including travel hair dryer/curling iron/travel iron etc. Put all dressy dresses into cleaners bags and put on top of everything. The bags stop the dresses from wrinkling by sliding around inside the case.
Definitely 2 large suitcases, and a large carry-on,plus a large purse. All makeup and accessories in carry-on or purse. AUGH…I’M TIRED JUST TALKING ABOUT IT!

  4. Mindy Holt says:

See now, why bother with packing. Just buy all new when you get there! problem solved!

  5. maria says:

I am a quick packer as well. I’m opposite in that I try to pack as few shoes as possible, that way everything can go in 1 suitcase to reduce space.

  6. Leane says:

Trying to pack for a trip always seems to make it painfully obvious that you have nothing to wear. At least, that is how it always feels to me! Good luck with your whole trip!

  7. Steph says:

Lucky girl ! Have fun !

  8. Autumn says:

    I always pack too much…

  9. I wish I had packing ‘zen’ to share with you – but I can almost guarantee 1) I will not pack until the night before I leave, 2) I DO NOT make a list at all (bad, I know) but if I did, I am certain I could never be as organized as you, 3) I’m only going to be there Fri-Sun and have NO idea how I will fit everything!

    Can’t wait to see you!

  10. Beverly Dickison says:

take an empty suitcase with you, buy what you need there, then bring it home!!

  11. Jenny AW says:

I am always afraid I will forget something when I pack. A list is the best thing to use so you don’t forget anything. I tend to bring more than I need. Make sure you make the list well in advance of your trip. That way you will always have time to add items to the list when you aren’t stressed or hurried.

  12. Roxy says:

i can pack in 20 minutes. Let’s be honest. I tend to wear the same thing over and over. If I don’t, I go overboard!

  13. Susan Heim says:

Ugh, packing is the worst! I’m with you. I absolutely hate it. I just want someone to do it for me. I can never decide what to wear, and always manage to pick the wrong things. Anyway, have an awesome time at the conference, and we look forward to hearing all about it!

  14. I hate packing too I definitely agree with your toothpick to the eyeball analogy. Have fun in Vegas wish Iw as going!

  15. Tracy says:

I could pack for you.. the way you were talking I would be perfect… Maybe I should start a packing business. LOL

  16. Dana says:

I am like you. I do not like to pack…however, I will say that you a have a one-up on me because atleast you start early and try to prepare. I do not like packing so I put it off until the very last day before we leave. I have been lucky so far, and have not yet forgotten anything. Have fun in Vegas!

  17. Dani says:

I am a list make for packing my self. If I don’t do it, I forget something for sure. I usually start 1-2 days before and start with my feet and move up to my head and take 1 of everything for each day. Then I think about what I might be doing for those days outside of either work or fun. I usually end up with a pretty organized suitcase. Have a great trip and lots of fun.

  18. Jen Hinton says:

My problem is not the packing it’s the unpacking. Let’s just say I am glad I didn’t need any of the clothes from my trip to Blogher until two months later. Just sayin’.

  19. I hate packing too, but I’m even worse at unpacking ;) Have a safe trip!

  20. Matt says:

I am not very good at packing! When I went to Africa last fall, we were allowed to bags, a carry-on, and a personal bag. I had all of them! In fact, we had packed some stuff for the missionaries and my bags were actually over-weight. We had to swap stuff from my checked bags into bags of people I was traveling with. Guess I’m not much of a help.

  21. Carl says:

i’m a guy, so i pack by thinking “staying x days, need x boxers, x socks, x shirts, x pants” and only take 2 pairs of shoes with me, because of space. and very rarely will i take more than one bag (because…i actually only have one bag, ha). of course, this packing takes place 30 minutes before i have to leave.

i am very intrigued by your list making! and i would love love love if you still had that list, with stuff crossed off, to have that featured on my ridiculous side project site, thediscardedlist.com. the name kinda says it all. i don’t make lists myself (because i’m lazy, think i’m smarter than i am), but i’m fascinated that in this digital age, how many people still do write things on paper.

good luck with the packing, and have fun at Blog World Expo!

  22. Vegas! How fun!! My husband and I are trying to get back out there soon … it’s been too long. Hope you have a great conference:)
