Remembering Our Fallen Heroes, and Honoring Our Veterans

Memorial Day Images Woman at Grave

Tonight as I was browsing Facebook, I came across this image that my friend Lisa posted, and all I could do was stare at the photo and fight back tears as I was overcome with emotion. I imagined myself in this woman’s shoes for just a moment and felt my heart break. So many people have had to deal with this sorrow, and so many lives have been lost so that we may continue to live in freedom.

We owe those men and women who lost their lives for our country more than we can ever express.

Though they are gone, they are not forgotten – we honor them this weekend.

I’m honored to have two family members who have served our country with strength and courage. My brother Phil is retired from the Army – he served two tours of duty in Iraq as a Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. So yes, he jumped out of planes for a living – which totally fits his personality. My amazing stepmother, Shelby, is also a 12-year army veteran. I’m so proud of both of them for their service to our country. However, I’m most thankful for the fact that they are still here with us to celebrate holidays, birthdays, milestones – I can’t imagine having to deal with that great of a loss.

I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m so proud to be Walmart Mom – mostly because I feel so blessed to be associated with a company that truly cares. I would venture to say that on a monthly basis I hear about something wonderful that they are doing that I didn’t know about before – for kids, for our schools, with regards to sustainability – and now I can add supporting our military to that growing list.

So how is Walmart supporting our military? Here are a few of the ways that stood out to me:

  • Walmart is a national sponsor of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s “Hiring Our Heroes” job fairs, helping to put on hundreds of job fairs across the country where Walmart, Sam’s Club and other employers will have the opportunity to recruit veterans. Last year alone, tens of thousands of veterans were connected to job opportunities through these fairs.
  • The Walmart Foundation donated $1 million to the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) Program
to help send 300 veterans with disabilities to entrepreneurship bootcamp at one of seven major university partners. It will also facilitate the expansion of the program to two additional schools and support small business training for more than 100 military family members.
  • Walmart recently launched Walmart Careers With A Mission – a resource helping transitioning military and veterans match their skills to Walmart careers.
  • Walmart’s Military Family Promise guarantees a job at a nearby store or club for all military personnel, and military spouses, employed at Walmart and Sam’s Club who move to a different part of the country because they or their spouse have been transferred by the United States military. The promise also ensures associates called away to active military duty will be paid any difference in their salary if the associate is earning less money during their military assignment.

Lastly, in honor of Memorial Day I wanted to share this photo with you – each year Walmart partners with Wreaths Across America in December to lay wreaths across the graves of thousands of men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty. It’s a very powerful way to pay our respects to those who served with so much courage.

What a great post. Without our veterans and those brave women & men who gave their lives for our country, we wouldn’t be where we are now and enjoying freedom.
