Smartphone On Demand: AT&T GoPhone for $45 A Month

2 Comments 27 August 2014

Well, it’s official. My daughter has asked for a phone.

I knew this day would come but I’m a little bummed it came so soon.  She is 7, so obviously the answer is no.  No, she may not have a phone because let’s face it, she still doesn’t excel at matching her own clothes or even finding a pair of socks to wear, so carrying around a $200 device is out of the question.  However, I’m not going to pretend like there aren’t times where having an extra phone to give her wouldn’t make my life easier. She is now at the age where she goes to a friend’s house for a play date without me and she stays after school for extracurricular activities.  Since most people no longer have house phones, it would be nice to have a direct line of communication to her to check in and make sure she is ok.

Enter the AT&T GoPhone with the exclusive rate plan for Walmart customers.  Instead of adding another phone to our contract, we decided that a phone like this was a better fit for our family.  There is no contract, and for $45 monthly we have unlimited talk, unlimited text, and 1GB of data.

To give you an idea of how much 1 GB of data is – my husband and I share 6 GB a month, and we are heavy data users.  So when you couple that with the benefits of unlimited talk, unlimited text (including unlimited texts to numbers in over 100 different countries which is so important to those of us with family living in far-flung places across the globe), and NO annual contract it’s a pretty sweet deal.  However this plan is available exclusively at Walmart.  (Nearest Walmart too far?  No problem, you can keep up with your plan by purchasing online and choosing “email delivery” at checkout.  Sweet!)

With such great no-contract options, we can keep one of these phones at the house, and essentially just pay to have it activated when we need it.  It’s the perfect thing to slip in our kids’ overnight bags, just for that peace of mind.  Plus, my husband has been jonesing for an Android phone for years but has been unwilling to give up his iPhone – so now he gets the best of both worlds!

Not only is the service a great deal – but this phone is pretty amazing, too.  It comes pre-loaded with features like AT&T Drive Mode (which won’t allow the phone to send or receive texts when you are moving over 25 miles per hour), Google Maps, and AT&T locker which gives you up to 5GB (for free) to store your photos and videos.  My husband and I both really loved the large display and the super awesome real-time news feed–called BlinkFeed–which I was able to connect with my various social networks but also pull in some super cool content from places like the Huffington Post, PopSugar, and more.  My absolute favorite part about the HTC Desire 610 is the high-resolution, lightening-fast camera.  While I hate to compare, I’m going to do it anyway–because this phone takes amazing photos at the exact moment that I push the button.  No delay, like with my iPhone.  Not to mention – there is a selfie timer on the front facing camera! Awesome!

Overall the HTC Desire 610 makes a great choice as a bonus phone for our family, and the no-contract options from Walmart are just the icing on the cake.  If you’re in the market for what we affectionately call a “burner phone” — be sure and check out the AT&T GoPhone Service at Walmart.
