Are Flats Fashionable Footwear? {Fashion Poll}

28 Comments 10 April 2009

I have a closet (ok, a closet FLOOR) full of shoes. Maybe I’ll show you sometime, but that would mean I have to attempt to clean up my closet first. If I’m ever struck with that desire – well you should buy a lottery ticket. Anyway, what was I saying? Let’s see, la dee dahhh…oh yes! Shoes! I definitely have favorite “types” of shoes. I love heels, but I have flat feet, and almost all heels hurt me (don’t worry, I suffer through, per my mother’s statement through my entire lifetime “you’ve gotta suffer to be beautiful.”) That leaves me with only one option for the non-summery, wintery type months. Flats.

(Wow, did I have way too much caffeine today or what? This is why I don’t drink RedBull.)

Do you wear flats? One of my dream purchases is a pair of Chanel Ballet Flats, and one day when I have loads of money (ha!) I fully intend to own a pair. I just think that ballet flats are a classic shoe that will always be in style. To me, the fact that a nice pair of flats are a wardrobe staple is fact. An indisputable truth. Chanel Ballet FlatsOr is it? The other day my world was turned upside down when I overheard someone make the statement “Ballet flats should only be used for ballet. I don’t like them, at all.” My head was spinning, was I hearing correctly? Did others not accept ballet flats as fact, as truth? I mean, look at how CUTE some of these are!!

Seeeeeeee? Cute, right? So what do you think? Do you belong to the republic of ballet flats like me? Or do you think ballet flats should only be used by little girls in dancing school? Take my poll below and let me know!

  1. Flats have their own charm and love those ballet flat. It gives one the flexibility to do the complex moves.Very nice and informative article. Great Job.

  2. Mrs. Dignan says:

I LOVE ballet flats!!!!! I never thought I would, but tried them one day, and totally fell in love!!!! I have a pair of the Chanel’s with the big logo on them. They are the most comfortable shoe I’ve ever owned!!!! I think ballet flats look classic, and I adore them!

  3. Tamara B. says:

I love wearing flats but there is nothing better than a sexy pair of high heels

  4. Pat says:

I love flats–there seems to be more variety in flats as opposed to heels. too.

  5. JFK says:

Yes, flats are great! I have a ton of them myself, I generally avoid heels. And with cool ballet flats like the Chanel pair you have pictured above, how could anyone not think they’re cute!

  6. Keonte' says:

That’s just like saying Tennis shoes should only be worn for tennis.

I love Ballet flats and went crazy when they went to Old Navy.

  7. Pamela S. says:

Flats are the only shoes I can wear. Sure, I could try and wear heals but I really don’t like falling down. I need to purchase “cute” flats because the ones I have aren’t so cute.

  8. Joan says:

I love flats. I wear them with jeans, capris, and casual skirts.

  9. patricia says:

I had to leave heels behind because of my feet being injured. So I am glad they are making flats now that are fashionable!

  10. Jackie says:

I love the look of flats on some, but on me they look like barges. I have really narrow feet so they just make them look longer and skinnier. Plus I’ve never found a pair that fit right and the one pair I did buy gave me blisters. That said I have friends that look adorable in them! And I wish that I could too…

  11. Renae says:

It depends on the outfit of course! I wear flats a lot but I also like a little heel as I am on the short side.

  12. GREAT post, Erika! Love it!

  13. Maureen Jamgochian says:

I love flats and wear them all the time. They are confortable, stylish and feel good on my feet.

  14. I’ve always loved flats but just recently started wearing them because I am short and I thought anything less than a heel would make me look dumpy. But I have changed my mind on that note and now I wear flats a lot.

  15. Betty says:

Haven’t found ballet flats with great arch support so I’ve left them to my daughter to wear. The ballet flat look has been blended into other styles which makes me think the trend is growing and popular.

  16. BrendaLea says:

I absolutely love ballet flats! I’d be lost without them. Since I can’t wear heels any more due to replaced hip and bad knees…. You can wear flats with jeans, with slacks with a skirt and even with shorts. I can’t believe someone actually said they didn’t like ballet flats. Wow! They must not have any style sense.

  17. JenniMac says:

I wear nothing but flats these day. I have at least 20 different pair. I love them. They go anywhere and with almost anything. You have to be carefull with the flats you choose though. I’ve had some that just look strange on my feet.
I have a pair that has too long of a point in the toe and they curl up when I walk like witch shoes. They are waiting to be donated. I have another pointed pair that have softer point and they are much more flattering. I don’t think you can go wrong with a good pair of black ballet flats.

  18. Tina W says:

I’m in the non-flat camp. Flats just don’t give me the same zing as heels.

  19. Sky says:

Hello, My name is Sky, and I’m a shoe addict. Love them and have way to many!! I wear flats all the time, with jeans, capris, skirts. Love, love, love them!

  20. Abby says:

I think flats can be fashionable but I haven’t ever owned a pair. Sure, the look great on other people but every time I try them I cringe when I look in the mirror! They remind me of a young girl wearning a flowy dress and cropped tights.

  21. Laney says:

Flats can be extraordinarily chic. Just stay away from the square toed, tassel bearing sort : )

  22. Alice hansen says:

I personally think flats can look very very fashionable. There’s really no way a person can wear heels ALL the time. I have a 6 month old son so I’m super happy that flats are in style these days.

  23. I have worn ballet flats because I’ve admired them on other women. If you do decide to get a pair, make sure that the sole is structured and padded. I bought cute ones, but at the end of the day, my sole and arches hurt because the sole of the shoe was too thin. I added padding the next time I wore them and it is much better.

  24. Mrs. Sitcom says:

Flats in general are great — they go with pants, shorts, skirts, dresses, etc. I think ballet flats can be tricky, but you can find cute ballet-ish flats with a cool buckle or detail, and you’re all set!

  25. Celeste says:

Oh my goodness!! I’m with ya!! I have TONS, I mean TONS of shoes!! And, I must say – a majority of them are flats…LOVE them!!! :)

[…] I’ve been wanting to implement a Street Style section of Chic Shopper Chick for a while now, and I have been gathering pictures for a couple of weeks now to bring to you when I can.  I am at WordCamp NOLA this weekend and yesterday at lunch, I shocked/freaked out some new friends when I darted to the window to take a picture of this chick and her rockin’ style!  I loved the tight, striped navy and white boat neck shirt paired with a bright red skirt.  The whole look felt very “french” to me, don’t you think?  It has a certain je ne sais quoi about it.  I loved that she paired it with a red bag and a pair of simple pointed flats.  {PS – What do you think of flats/ballet flats in general?  Weigh in on yesterdays post on ballet flats!} […]
