My Style Obsession, My Style Icon

11 Comments 08 June 2009

I’m not sure when it started exactly, but I think it was around 9 years ago when I fell in love with the iconic brand that is known simply as “Chanel“. It’s interesting, really, why people fall in love with the brands they do — there is no rhyme or reason for it. To me, Chanel is classy, timeless, and stylish all in one – an almost impossible combination and one that I hope to emulate daily — even without a designer label. Chanel appeals to the eternal feminist in me, subscribing to my idea that clothes and accessories should accentuate a woman’s best features and not detract from them.

Around the same time, I discovered French actress Audrey Tautou while watching what is now one of my all-time-favorite movies, Amélie. Tautou quickly became my style icon, I love the way she can wear even the most simple ensembles and make them look like a million bucks. Remniscent of another famous Audrey, she carries herself with incredible amounts of style and grace. Just like my pull towards Chanel, I’m not sure exactly what it is about her style that draws me to her, but it is an undeniable cross of class, simplicity, and sensuality.

Much to my excitement, the two have actually collided head-on, with Tautou starring in the new French feature film “Coco avant Chanel” – or, in English – “Coco before Chanel”. The film was released in France in April, but here in the States we have to wait until September to see it. Not only that, but Tautou has stepped in to be the new face of Chanel No. 5 – following in the footsteps of iconic women such as Catherine Deneuve, Marilyn Monroe, and most recently, Nicole Kidman. I’m sure you remember the short film for Chanel No. 5 that starred Nicole Kidman and was directed Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann. Taking a similar step in that direction, the newest Chanel No. 5 short film reunites star Audrey Tautou with Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the director who jump-started her career with Amélie.audrey-tautou-chanel-n5

I love the new short film, it is done in a style very similar to Amélie, and fans of the film will notice it immediately. It’s less than 2.5 minutes long, and is definitely worth watching — I love it. As always, Tautou looks impeccable. I know you’ll love it as much as I do. Let me know what you think in the comments!

  1. Audrey Tautou is great; I loved Amélie as well, and although I’m not very familiar with Coco Chanel, I think she’s a great pick for this role. As you say, she’s got a timeless, classy look that represents the Chanel brand well, and she can make pretty much any outfit look good! I’m still wondering what happened to Coco Avant Chanel in Canada, as it looks like it was meant to be released in April, but I’ve been hunting around for its release dates, and I think it’s been pushed back until September. What gives?

Wow, talk about taking your breath away! I love it!

I have to share…my bff’s mom always had Chanel No. 5 on her dressing table and we’d splash some here and there. Once when we were in middle school, we were on a tennis kick. Anyway, trying to impress some cute high school tennis players we covered ourselves with Chanel No. 5. I swear, they could smell us coming! LOL. I still love wearing it today. Makes me feel like that middle school child, all grown up!

I love both Chanel and Tautou too! I fell in love at around 14–I used to cut out the gorgeous ads and pretty much papered my walls with them.

  8. Elisa says:

I love Chanel’s mini-movies. They make me think of my mom telling me of how commercials were whole stories when she was a girl. Now they are just short, flashy and annoying.

  9. shaylan says:

shes so beautiful! i wish all commercials were that long, but there were less of them, you know? it really allows for more creativity. amelie is one of my favorite movies, too!
