Mystic Tan. To Spray or Not To Spray.

6 Comments 11 January 2010

Ok, I know I’m supposed to be the expert here, but I need a little help. I have this Mardi Gras Ball coming up very soon, and well, my skin is so pale that you can practically see through it. I plan to wear a strapless dress. It’s a grey dress which won’t do much against my vampire-like skin.

I’m a big fan of how I look with a little glow, nothing overdone, just a little color. My mom always said that tan fat was better than pale fat (oh yeah, welcome to my world) – and well, I don’t consider myself fat in the least, but people, c’mon – I’ve had a baby. Wait, better yet, I should say I’ve had a baby and my name is not Camila Alves or Heidi Klum. There are parts of me that will just look better with a tan.

Don’t worry, I’m fanatical about doing everything in my power to prevent wrinkles and sun damage, so I know better than to lay in a tanning bed for a few weeks. Instead, I think it will be best to spray a bunch of chemicals on my skin. That’s gotta be better, right?

But, um. I’m skeered. What if it turns me orange?! The oompa-loompa look is not good on me. How do I know what level to choose? What if I go from looking very French to looking very Italian in about 20 minutes flat? That’s gonna be awkward, right?

Have you done this? Tips/tricks/suggestions for me?

Go for it! A Mystic Tan is a do it yourself (in a tanning salon) touchless spray tan. It’s usually much cheaper than a custom spray tan done by the salon staff. Spray tanning is cool – no cancer, no wrinkles, and an even-toned color. No orange streaks or hands like with tan in a tube. Look for coupons though, because the price can really vary. And don’t go to a dive…the place may be dirty.

I’ve had a Mystic Tan and a person-doing-sprayed-on tan at expensive spa. I liked both of them. Remember to exfoliate before especially areas like elbows and knees. Go to a different place, or get a different person that gives you better instructions! Also, you can read about it ahead of time at the Mystic website (google Mystic tan)

    Good luck!

I have friends that I have tried Mystic Tan and overall their experiences have been good. Personally, I have only had airbrush tans done by a real person… I LOVE the way I look afterward and always get compliments with people inquiring where I vacationed or what tanning salon beds I am currently tanning in :) It looks extremely natural and since the person is looking at you, they can give you a more even application than the machine. Go with airbrush tanning!!

Spray away, m’lady! Definitely get sprayed, try a level two — and why not go get it done now, just as a test, so there’s plenty of time to see if you like that level, want to increase/decrease, or change the plan. A bit o’ color looks good on everyone. And, will definitely be crossing my fingers for you on the 23rd! :)

Erika- I too was once terrified of the spray tan and did have a horrific Mystic tan experience. I would NEVER get a mystic tan again, but have done the personal air brush tans, though more expensive, it’s worth it in my opinion if you’re willing to throw your modesty to the door (literally) :)

Quick recap of my mystic tan experience- little instructions, they tell you to hold your breath, go in, press the button, move around and you’re done. Not so- first of all, as soon as it started spraying, it was only coming out of one side instead of all around, I’m panicking (while holding my breath) and attempting to rub in the tanner from the one side all over. While it didn’t look as horrible as I suspected, it was streaky, the mark from the tops of my hands was so obvious, and it was just fake. Go for airbrush :)
