About a year ago, my kids were totally swept up in the mania that is Rainbow Loom. We were unofficial groupies – always in search of the perfect organizer for all of the rubber bands, purchasing the metal hooks for the loom instead of the plastic ones, stopping at 3 different Walmart stores in search of “glow in the dark” rubber bands — you know the drill. Naturally, when Walmart approached me about trying out some new patterns and projects with the new Monster Tail from Rainbow Loom, I felt like it was the perfect fit.
I decided to make these fun, thick chevron bracelets with the new Monster Tail from Rainbow Loom. The Monster Tail is neat because it is much smaller – so it would make a fun project to take on planes or long car rides – or even to bring to school for crafting during recess. Not to mention the Monster Tail is super affordable at only $6.54 at Walmart – it would make a great gift or stocking stuffer this holiday season!
Now, let’s move on to our fun Monster Tail tutorial!
This design uses the 6 middle pegs – so we will not use the two end pegs whatsoever.
The hardest part of making this bracelet is getting it started. Below are step-by-step photos of that process.
The instructions for the first 6 steps are as follows:
1. Stretch a band across the pegs diagonally, as shown, in a figure 8.
2. Using the remaining 4 pegs, stretch two additional bands across to the remaining pegs.
3. Using one of the bands placed in step 2, use your hook to reach into the inside of the band, pulling it to the outside of the bottom peg, as shown.
4. Repeat step 3 with the other band,
5. Now, place another band diagonally on top stretching from top left to bottom right. Do NOT twist it in a figure 8.
6. Slipping your hook inside of the 2nd band on the last peg, reach down to the bottom band, and pull it through and over. Repeat on the opposite side.
After these steps are complete – it is smooth sailing. Begin placing your rubber bands in triangles as shown in the above photo, and then using your hook, pull the bottom layers only over the top. Then, add an additional diagonal band and repeat step 6 above. Repeat these two steps until your bracelet is complete!
I had so much fun making these, and I made them in 2 fun colors. I will say these were a bit more tricky than some of the Rainbow Loom bracelets that we have created in the past, making them idea for older kids (or even mom!) to make. Now I’m in search of new designs to make. What is your favorite design on the Monster Loom?
